Even if she was not completely recovered from the minor quad issue that forced her out of the semi-final against West Indies, Australia believed star allrounder Ellyse Perry would be fit for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 final at Lord’s.
The team management termed it a ‘minor quad awareness’ and Perry retired hurt in Australia’s successful chase at The Oval. This was done as a precautionary measure so that the injury does not aggravate before one of the tournament’s biggest games.
Australia head coach Shelley Nitschke, speaking before the final, said Perry’s condition was still under consideration by the medical team but did concede that the importance of a World Cup final could weigh on any selection call.
Nitschke said the coaching staff will consider how much Perry can offer in batting, fielding and running between wickets. Australia would ideally want her 100 per cent fit, but not least with the significance of the final at stake, they may be more willing to take a touch more of a risk than usual.
Perry has been one of Australia’s most productive players across the tournament. In five innings, she is the team’s leading run-scorer, with 185 runs at an average of 46.25 and a strike rate of 135.03 heading into the final. Her vital runs in the form of two half-centuries against both Pakistan and India helped ensure Australia’s unbeaten progress to the final.
Key Performers Australia have similarly enjoyed major contributions from throughout the team. Several blokes have scored match winning innings, whilst the bowling lineup has been nearly always able to keep the opposition scoring at bay. Young left-arm seamer Lucy Hamilton has made an impression by maintaining an economical run rate and creating pressure during key phases of matches despite not getting the wickets to show for her efforts.
Australia face another key decision on whether to reinstate leg-spinner Alana King into the playing XI having missed the last two matches as Phoebe Litchfield returned from an injury lay-off.
The final will be a first World Cup decider for several younger players, such as Phoebe Litchfield and Georgia Voll. Nitschke said the coaching staff would like to see the squad enjoy the occasion but he wants them to treat it as just another game. She trusts the team’s preparation and thinks that sticking to normal routines will help the players perform under pressure.
Australia turn attention towards final preparations as they seguir carrying their fourth overall Women’s T20 World Cup trophy, with Perry’s fitness sure to remain the hot talking point leading into the knockout stage.
