Bhuvneshwar Kumar Returns to India’s T20I Squad for New Zealand Series

India have roped back prolific T20I pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar for the five-match series against New Zealand. The 39-year-old pacer returns to the international fold after almost four years, bringing leadership and depth to India’s bowling attack on the eve of an important T20I assignment.

Bhuvneshwar played his last T20I for India in November 2022, against New Zealand. The right-arm seamer has since continued to play locally, both in domestic cricket and in the Indian Premier League, where his ability to bowl economically with a new ball have kept him in contention as a partner option for seam bowling.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar Earns Recall After Strong IPL Season

His performances in the IPL have assisted his return at the age of 36, coming back to bowling well. In season 2026, Bhuvneshwar took 28 wickets at an economy rate of around 7.95. His control with the ball in the powerplay, along with picking out subtle variations at both ends of an innings has reinvigorated interest for a spot in India’s T20 plans.

It could prove especially helpful in New Zealand conditions where the new ball, no matter how old this Kookaburra is, can still do a bit. The pitches and the weather in New Zealand is also something that Bhuvneshwar understands from having played an extensive amount of cricket there.

One of the biggest talking points from the squad announcement was Jasprit Bumrah’s exclusion. The premier Indian pace bowler has been omitted as part of workload management and keeping future assignments in mind.

That should provide an opportunity for Bhuvneshwar to take more of a leader’s role in the pace attack on Bumrah’s absence. He is likely to offer them much-needed experience alongside younger pacers like Arshdeep Singh and Mayank Yadav.

Varun Chakaravarthy, the spinner has also return to the squad after recovering from a side strain. While Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel are the other options available, his addition further bolsters India’s spin choices.

The squad contains a blend of seasoned veterans and up-and-coming stars. Shreyas Iyer appointed captain: Tilak Varma will be vice-captain. There is a batting group with the likes of Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan and an 18-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

India vs New Zealand T20I Series

India and New Zealand’s five-match T20I series will commence at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on October 22, 2026. The series will help both teams evaluate their combinations before committing to further fixtures on an international level.

The series marks an important return to the international frame for Bhuvneshwar Kumar. His performance in New Zealand will be under scrutiny as he aims to make the most of a comeback after years off the Indian T20I map

India will hope that his presence can infuse experience, precision and T20 acumen into a bowling unit sharing co-ordinates to help the team off a great start in the series.
