After completing India’s white-ball tour in England, Ryan ten Doeschate has left as the assistant coach of the Indian men’s cricket team. He has now completed a two-year tenure with the national side, where he formed part of its coaching group.
The report adds the eight-team T20I series against Ireland (June 27, 29) was already on his mind while he was in England and had also told the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) about it. India had a disappointing tour where they lost both the T20I and ODI series. Ten Doeschate has either taken an exit from the CPL with no official reasons announced, though he is likely to rejoin his IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as part of their coaching staff.
After India’s T20 World Cup victory, the India head coach position was taken over by Gautam Gambhir in 2024, and at that point, Ten Doeschate joined the support staff as part of Gambhir’s extended entourage. He had previously worked with Gambhir at KKR and was one of his picks for the support staff as well. During his time in the role, he had input across all areas including batting philosophy, standards of fielding and player development.
He will rejoin KKR with Abhishek Nayar, a coach he has worked with successfully at multiple franchises before. They had previously worked with each other at KKR, before having a brief stint with India’s coaching staff.
This former all-rounder has had a long and fruitful association with the Kolkata outfit. He was part of KKR’s IPL title-winning teams as a player in 2012 and 2014. He then came back to the side as a fielding coach in 2022 and continued with the franchise until 2024, playing a crucial role in guiding the side towards another IPL title under mentor Gautam Gambhir and head coach Chandrakant Pandit.
The highlights in Ten Doeschate’s tenure with the Indian team were multiple as they got their hands on a number of important silverware, including the 2025 Asia Cup and winning back-to-back ICC Men’s T20 World Cup titles for India (2026). The Test team challenge was a different story altogether, losing all three of their respective series away in Australia and at home to New Zealand and South Africa.
His return to the franchise in Kolkata Knight Riders as a coach will come as a good news ahead of the new IPL season, while India will have to look for another support staff in this position before their next international assignment.
